The Mari Lwyd

I used to perform “Mari Lwyd” (aka “The Hood’n Horse”) live on tenor ukulele and the ballad has always been one of my favourite recordings by Chris Wood. I decided to try and record it at home, embellishing my original ukulele arrangement with other instruments to give the ballad more of a galloping rhythm. The Mari Lwyd has her roots in the south east of Wales, not far from where I live in the Black Mountains. Folk memory of this mythical character could possibly have continued through millennia, possibly from Iron Age worship of the goddess Epona, and maybe even represented by the chalk cutting of the Uffington Horse……? Whatever the history, The Mari Lwyd is a great folk custom and without any neighing, it also has a grand ballad to hoof along with.
