Sun and sand aren’t the only things beach-goers might find during their trip to the lake this summer. If environmental conditions are just right, your favorite swim spot might have some unwanted, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) that can make people and animals sick. This presentation will discuss the common exposure routes and symptoms associated with blue-green algae and how the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and local health departments work together to investigate and respond to blue-green algae illness reports. Audience members will hear firsthand from a local biologist at the Eau Claire City-County Health Department and learn about how their team monitors beaches for blue-green algae (and E.coli!), issues health advisories, and works with citizens to address questions and concerns. As an added bonus, you will receive a crash course on identifying harmful algae and learn ways to stay safe from hazardous water conditions. Presenters: Jordan Murray, Wisconsin Division of Public Health and Tristin Faust, Eau Claire City-County Health Department
