Historically, sections of the A165 follow the paths of old 18th-century turnpike roads, such as the Bridlington to White Cross route established in 1767 and the Hull to Hedon route from 1745, reflecting its long-standing importance in regional travel. Significant modern upgrades include a 2008 realignment near Scarborough to ease congestion, with new roundabouts, bypasses, and widened sections designed to improve safety and traffic flow.
