In the lowlands of Chryse Planitia, Mars reveals a nightmare: a thick, brick-red fog forms when iron-oxide dust spikes and mixes with morning moisture, creating a conductive rust mist. It doesn’t just blind the crew—it electrochemically corrodes protective shells and triggers external short circuits. When their guide robot loses signal, a team of astronauts must walk into the crimson haze where radios screech and die, tethers vanish into darkness, and orange static lightning dances inside the fog. They improvise to survive: A high-power laser strobe to pierce the mist and communicate by signals A breakthrough under pressure: Cold Ceramic Spray, a pressurized silica mix that hardens into a glossy white dielectric shell—insulating and corrosion-resistant But just as hope returns, a violent gust turns the quiet fog into a dust flood, grinding away their fresh coating. Deep inside the rust mist, they finally find the robot… and something stranger: it’s collecting emerald-green crystals (“Green Iron”) formed by the reaction between the mist and an unknown mineral. Then the temperature drops—iron rain begins to fall, and the Rover sinks into red iron mud.
