Low carb can mean high protein, should we worry about renal function? In a paper from Professor Fouque, a past-chair of the European Renal Nutrition Working Group was quoted as saying “A high-protein diet induces glomerular hyperfiltration, which, according to our current state of knowledge, may boost a pre-existing low-grade chronic kidney disease – which, by the way, is often prevalent in people with diabetes. It might even increase the risk of de novo kidney diseases.” As a long-term proponent of a low carb approach to achieve weight loss and improve glycaemic control for people with type 2 diabetes, Medical Doctor Dr David Unwin was concerned. If we cut one of the three macronutrients (carbs) then it stands to reason that one or both of the remaining macronutrients (protein or fat) are likely to be increased. In clinical practice he found himself encouraging patients to eat more eggs, meat and fish. Was he wrong? Since 2013 he had been collecting data on his low carb patients but did not include measures of renal function. He had evidence for high protein diets causing renal damage reviewed and both the data analysis and the review will be discussed in this presentation.
