The terrain of the route was a combination of hill paths and tracks, a woodland track and quiet country lanes. The walking was generally easy on level or gradual undulating ground except for two steep ascents and one steep descent. Route finding was quite easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There were 3 stiles to negotiate. There was also a small stream to jump across due to a broken wooden footbridge. Along the walk you visit: Hethpool and Elsdon Burn; Little Hetha and Great Hetha; Trowupburn farmstead by Trowup Burn and Sinkside Hill; Colley Valley with College Burn. Scenery includes: quiet winding country lanes, a tree-lined lane and rolling green hills; tremendous panorama of neighbouring hills, especially The Cheviot, excellent views of Yeavering Bell, Newton Tors, Hethpool Lake and the woodland of Sinkside Hill; fabulous views along Collgee Valley with College Burn running through it; drystone walls, summit cairns, hillfort's stone ramparts, and the remains of a Neolithic stone circle; fine Arts & Crafts-style cottages, 1919-built Grade II Listed Hethpool House, Trowupburn farmstead. You may also encounter sheep on the lanes and in the hill fields. I did this walk with my wife Anne whilst on a Northumberland walking holiday during December 2018. We drove from our holiday accommodation in Glanton, Northumberland to the starting location of Hethpool, Northumberland. We parked in a small car park, a little south of Hethpool House, at grid reference NT 893 281, which was also the start location of the walk. What gear is on your hiking backpacking checklist?
