Is the hack of a robot car a real threat? Most vehicles that are available today are what we would consider as connected vehicles and this connectivity is about enabling new functionality whether it's for convenience or for safety applications. Cyber security has become more important as the additional connectivity and the automation in vehicles, commonly known as a robot car, has come together to enable these both increasing exposure to attack and increasing number of things that could potentially go wrong if there are attacks. With increasing connectivity and also some of the automated features on vehicles now this is increasing the complexity of the systems within those vehicles to the point where we have to protect them against the increasing risk of failure and also against the increasing risk of attack. Some of those risks given that we're dealing with a vehicle which is what we call a cyber physical system this means that its attacks on the cyber elements of those systems have a real physical effect in the real world and create risks potentially to life and health as well as the traditional kind of security risks that we are used to around things like data security and vehicle theft. Paul Wooderson from Horiba Mira outlines some of the risks and opportunities of connected vehicle cybersecurity.
