Vintage footage of the legendary Roffey Robins 5-a-side tournaments from, I think, May 1983 and 1984. At Horsham Rugby Club, Hammerpond Road. The annual tournament, known as the Roffey Robins 'Family Day', first made an appearance in 1980. In those early years, the tournament was exclusively for the considerable number of boys who played for the various Robins teams in the Horsham Mini-Minor League. The players from each age group were pooled, and then divided as fairly as possible into teams of five (plus a sub). The teams were named after a club from the then 1st Division of the football league (I remember winning the tournament one year as West Ham) and then pitched against each other in a group stage, the top teams earning a place in the knockout stages. I believe the tournament eventually evolved into a larger event, and invitations extended to the other clubs of the Horsham Mini-Minor league. But the original Robins Family Day was, for many (myself included), the highlight of the footballing calendar and has gone down in Robins folklore. Seen here, either playing or watching the presentations, are (in no particular order): Richard Ponsford, Ian Lake, David Hamilton, Chris Harris, Benjamin Burton, Stewart Green, Nick Meinhertzagen, Steven Ponsford (seen both playing and being presented 'Player-of-the-Tournament' both years), Massimo Mazzeo, David Newton, Simon Prodger and Justin Vibert. Blink and you'll miss 'em. Clearly there are plenty of other kids playing, but if I can make out who they are, I can't recall their names. If you remember taking part in the Robins Family Day, or see yourself in the footage somewhere, it would be great if you could leave a comment. Rich Ponsford (the ginger kid in the Dunlops)
