Another "What you see is what you hear" cover of a band I've been a fan of for most of my time as a musician: Uroboric Forms by Cynic. This song is a great representation of the whole album "Focus". It features almost every unique element they have in their music, at least in my opinion. (And it's my favourite song to play of that album!....Well, Celestial Voyage and How Could I are also fun) When I listened to them the first time, I think I was 15 or 16 then, I didn't like them at all. Too weird for my young and naive ears. But around the same time they did their reunion with the subsequent release of Traced In Air I became a fan. Still remember the time they played Evolutionary Sleeper the first time on their reunion shows. I just started playing guitar back then. The production of Focus was too dark and old-school for my taste and the song-writing still too jazzy for young Kevin. I think that's the reason I became a fan with Traced in Air. It was easier to understand and it sounded way better. Though my opinion on these two albums reversed with the years. I now hold Focus in high regards, as one of my favourite and most important albums with Traced in Air just being meeh. I really dislike artists that pushed boundaries with their music that then released just okay music after that. Especially after a reunion. And Focus was way ahead of its time. Like a lot. (Btw: I'm totally fine with Necrophagist never releasing an album again lol) And for anyone interesting in the evolution of my playing and technique: Cynic was one of the first big steps to that. They have a unique picking style and one a bit similiar to Necrophagist (Well actually it's the other way around). Cynic were a big influence on my playing for my late teens/early twenties. Another story: I did play a show with Max Phelps, he played the guitar and did growls for Cynic, as well as for Death DTA (and his own band "Exist"). We both were joining Defeated Sanity on stage for their first Dharmata themed show. Really cool guy, got along really great and I'd love to hang out again. It's almost four years now. I hope I did this song justice Max haha. So much for my "connection" to this band. To the song: I had my issues with every step in making it haha. I don't like the camera angles I chose and neither the guitar sound. I tried to come close to the original, but dialed in too much gain and bass for laying it on top of the actual song. I tried my best in post. To my playing and the interesting part: I have a complete Cynic tab book that was made by a guy named "Jeff Litvak". (Not the newly released one that was transcribed by someone else...Evan was his name I believe). It was available on the old cynicalspheres website and has really accurate tabs of the album. I have no idea how he did it. I know he did some tabs of other bands of that era. (Forbidden, Watchtower and I also Atheist I think) They are so accurate that I believe he has some connection to the band and/or transcribed it together with the band. He even has detailed notes on perfoming the songs and the meaning and origin of those. I've had this for years now and copied them to guitar pro and since they are almost lost now (I think they are still online on the metaltabs forum but nowhere else) I share them here. They were freely available back then anyway. They are a must-read and learn for every Cynic fan out there! STOP: I'm sorry, I was asked to take the tab tab-book down, since Sheet Happens made a new version together with Paul Masvidal. If you want to learn the songs with accurate tabs, then support the artist by buying the new one. They even did one for Traced In Air. To my next video(s): I ordered a green screen and some other backgrounds, as well as two softboxes. Let's see what I can do with that. Next song will probably be "Lichtmensch" by Der Weg Einer Freiheit and after that, depending on my spare time "Two-Pound Torch" by Cryptopsy (with a tab made by yours truly). In the meantime, enjoy this video :)
