Got a new shirt. Needed to record a video of said shirts album. Here's The Black Dahlia Murders "Black Valor". This time I don't really have anything to say for the description. But I'll try anyway. It was just one of those weeks where I was in the mood for some videos. I think this is the fastest song I've learned and recorded, in terms of learning and recording (not speed). Transcribed it friday evening. Was a bit too tired to record the video that evening so I filmed it saturday morning at around 7 A.M. before I left for Cologne. Got back this morning, finished mixing the audio and editing the video. I also made a tab of what I play here, that I'll share at the bottom of the description. I might make a full tab later, but for now it's just what I play here including the solo. Let me talk about The Black Dahlia Murder a bit. This album was actually the album that got me into them. Before Deflorate I always thought they were this weird core band that tried playing death metal. Like every close-minded metalhead. With the addition of Ryan Knight I got interested in them, as I listened to Arsis a lot back then. I was also more of a shred guy at that time. My focus on general guitar playing and rhythm came much later. What I think about my playing: I'm neither a shred/solo/lead guitar player nor a strict rhythm player. I just like playing the guitar, with everything it has to offer. I embraced that years later, and that's when I started getting away from solely focusing on lead playing. So that's how I see it now. It's always great hearing that people dig my picking hand and stuff, but that's not all I do. At least that's what I think. I like mixing both into one thing. Makes a weird mix of licks and riffs. Ricks...Liffs... Back to the band. So I really liked Deflorate when it came out, or shortly after that. Can't remember, but Ritual was not out yet. My transcribing skills were not existing back then and I always wanted to play this song. It was always sort of on my bucket list. I even had an incomplete tab of a drop C version that I started. Now with the GIO tuned to C standard I gave it a go again. I would love to talk about Ryan Knights playing but the thing that sticks out to me is, how real his solos are. No note for note editing, real playing that is even sloppy at times. Makes up his charm I think. But they are weird to play. There are certain solos that are so lively they hard to recreate. My taste for their albums went kinda backwards over the years. At first my favourite album was Deflorate. Then when I kinda got away from focusing on great lead players Nocturnal grew on me. It's still my favourite album, and the next TBDM video will be from that album. But now, I really dig Miasma, so far that it could replace Nocturnal or be on the same place. Never really liked the production of it, which is why I never really listened to it back then. And weird opinion, as much as I like Ryan Knight and Brandon Ellis (really great solos), I do think that John Kempainens solos on Nocturnal were perfect for this music lol. It doesn't always have to be flashy and tasteful guitar solos. Johns leads were tasteful too, even if they were simpler. But they had a different kind of energy. And I do think The Black Dahlia Murder became a bit too flashy/playful with their recent albums. I liked the "simpler" style of Miasma and Nocturnal. Another thing which I remembered about that "memory override" thing I talked about in another description: There was a band that I played for where I experienced that heavily but I couldn't remember which one it was. I now remember and it was last years show with Defeated Sanity. Because of some private issues I was under a lot of stress that time, and with that kind of music it added up to some mental pressure. And I rememember rehearsing a song, that I've already learned. It was already in my muscle memory. I think it was Consumed by Repugnance. There was that one riff that had some issues. And while cleaning that riff up, I completely forgot it. It was gone from muscle memory. I really had to learn it again, like I've never played it before. That was some frightening experience and the only time it was that severe. And that's how I even started that whole subject. While visiting my good friend Jens yesterday he told me that he has experienced similiar issues with stress and playing. Same as Chason Westmoreland, who was the drummer for last years show with The HAARP Machine. We had an issue with one song from the rehearsal. He was supposed to change his drum parts last minute, which is not something that I can recommend. And we talked about that subject back then too. Heavily rehearsed stuff shouldn't be changed last minute because of the possibility of those issues. Anyway, here's the tab for this song: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1enaC... Enjoy the video :)
