72km 3600m with up to 5m/s climbs. A fun first day at Piedrahita

We made it to Piedrahita in 2021. I’d hardly dared hope it would come off but it did. This was was my day one flight and what a start with a rocket of a thermal up from launch to over 3600m. A fantastic start which made getting across the pass so much easier. After topping up leaving the pass I got low 30km out but thankfully found another cracking climb, this one over 5m/s at one point and topped out with Iain at 3500m again. I pushed north of Avila with my sights set on Segovia but again got low. This time to 145 AGL and setting up to land, when I predictably found another climb. It’s pretty thermic in July. Back up high I was unfortunately tracking South then I needed North and try as I might, the climbs were taking me in the wrong direction so I decided to land. I was also conscious that one of our group had come down under his reserve, and I was the last one in the air. The pilot was badly bruised but no bones were broken which was a relief. Flying is a mind game in the end. A short walk through some high grass saw me meet up with Esther and my retrieve, so after collecting some others we were back at Piedrahita for a few drinks and a meal.
