What you are looking at is a satellite view of a rather unknown circular feature within a section of the Namib Desert within Namibia. This feature is in fact a large and relatively young impact crater known as Roter Kamm. It measures 2500 meters wide, and 130 meters deep. It formed not from an asteroid, but rather when a massive comet slammed into the planet 4.8 million years ago. This video will discuss how this ancient impact crater formed, and how frequently similar meteorite impacts occur on the planet.
