3MT 2021- Kate Haining- MVLS- Boosting brain power through cognitive training

In schizophrenia, cognitive impairments are strongly associated with poor functioning. However, the main pharmacological treatment – antipsychotic medication – is mostly ineffective at improving cognition. Nonpharmacological treatments, such as computerised cognitive training are therefore becoming increasingly important. Such training has been shown to improve cognitive performance, functioning and even neural activity in schizophrenia. Interestingly, cognitive impairments generally emerge even before the first episode of psychosis. Therefore, my research aims to determine the impact of computerised cognitive training in young people considered at risk of psychosis.
