Enga Governor and founder of the People's Party, Sir Peter Ipatas, has been removed from the government. While no formal announcement has been made, Prime Minister James Marape confirmed the decision in a message to a government WhatsApp group consisting of Cabinet and government MPs. Marape stated that Sir Peter was removed because he had been nominated by the Opposition as an alternate prime minister for the upcoming Vote of No Confidence (VONC). Sir Peter's People's Party is a key coalition partner in Marape's government. The party's General Secretary, Willie Palme, confirmed the removal and mentioned that an official statement would be released soon. Prime Minister Marape also addressed government members regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling, which directed the Speaker to reconvene Parliament for the VONC debate. He acknowledged that while he might disagree with the court's directive to Parliament, ignoring it would be contemptuous. In his message, Marape asked Sir Peter to step away from the government caucus until the political contest was settled. He expressed gratitude for Sir Peter's contributions but emphasized the importance of party loyalty. Marape stated that, as the leader of Pangu Party, he had a duty to honor the coalition members who had remained committed to the government. He invited all leaders to discuss the situation further in a meeting scheduled for Monday. Although no official expulsion notice has been issued, Sir Peter’s removal from the government WhatsApp group, just days before Parliament’s court-ordered sitting, signals his intent to challenge Marape for the prime ministership. Meanwhile, the People's Party remains divided, with Wabag MP Dr. Lino Tom already in the Opposition, while two other MPs—Jimi MP Wake Goi and Talasea MP Feddie Kumai—are still in government. Sir Peter could not be reached for comment. However, in a letter from November, he had previously confirmed his acceptance of the nomination for alternate Prime Minister, stating that he took the role with great honor and appreciation for the leaders who supported him in the national interest.
