Fulton County Pennsylvania History Tour! | Buchanan State Forest Camping

In this Episode: Our 2023 camping season starts NOW, with another Pennsylvania boon-docking adventure! This time, April 14, 2023, we are heading to the Buchanan State Forest near Sidling Hill. Our campsite is number 25, off of Oregon Road. If you choose to camp here, you’ll want to reserve your site on reserveamerica.com and be sure to bring a copy of your reservation confirmation. We were checked by a ranger at this site, so you’ll want to be prepared. Our goal for this adventure is to explore the remains of the South Pennsylvania Rail Road, Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike, a CCC Camp, and the 1778 Forbes Road. We have brought along, area historian, Russel Love, to help us explore this area. You’ll want to check out his facebook page (link below) if you’re interested in this kind of thing. We learn how railroad tunnels were built in the late 1800’s by exploring the right of way above the Sideling Hill Tunnel. We also located the 1778 Forbes Road switchbacks above the current PA Turnpike. Lastly, we find the Shade Gap branch of the East Broad Top RR, where it was to connect to the South Pennsylvania Rail Road.
