In this episode of The Happiness Games for Romantic Relationships, we explore a dynamic many couples experience—but rarely name: Competition inside romantic relationships. Episode Page: https://www.yizhaomartins.com/vlog/wh... Using real examples from my couples therapy Zoom room, I break down three common ways competition shows up: 1️⃣ Competing for airtime, validation, or attention 2️⃣ Competing around contribution—money, chores, childcare, emotional labor 3️⃣ Competing through games and recreational activities From there, we go beneath behavior to meaning, using: Parts work to understand which parts are activated by competition System-Centered Therapy and phases of group development A trauma-informed, relational lens focused on safety and belonging I also share two personal examples that explore what often lives underneath competition—visibility, worth, power, and unmet needs. Finally, we reframe an important question: 👉 Is this competition driving connection—or restraining it? The context and goal of competition matter. When understood, competition can become a source of clarity and growth instead of disconnection. @estherperel @TheGottmanInstitute @DrSueJohnson @nicabm @psychologytoday3884
