Science for Sustainability 2025 Conference Panel discussion: Resilient Systems – Breaking the Sustainability Bubbles Speakers: Emilia Nygård (former Chair of ReGeneration 2030), Paavo Järvensivu (BIOS), Matti Pihlajamaa (VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland) Synopsis: This panel discussion explores critical perspectives on the green transition, innovation, and collective change. The panelists will examine whether current frameworks offer real solutions or remain superficial, addressing themes such as degrowth, the sufficiency economy, and a just transition. The session will begin with a short introduction to the Science for Sustainability spin-off, Solution Circle, and a video greeting from the Minister of the Environment, Sari Multala. Panel moderators: Susanna Lehvävirta (University of Helsinki, HELSUS) and Kirsi Niinimäki (Aalto University) Panelist biographies Paavo Järvensivu is a co-founder of the independent research unit BIOS, where he studies the political economy of ecological reconstruction – the rapid sustainability transformation of society. His recent work focuses on industrial policy and transition planning. Järvensivu holds the title of Docent in Environmental and Social Policy at the University of Helsinki. Matti Pihlajamaa is a Senior Scientist at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. His work focuses on science, technology, and innovation policy, innovation management, and sustainability. He manages research projects in innovation studies and advises companies and public organizations in designing effective approaches to promote sustainable innovation. Emilia Nygård is the former Chair of ReGeneration 2030, a fully youth-led organization uniting young sustainability activists from across the Nordic and Baltic Sea regions.
