The Ultimate Historic County Bingo Challenge continues! In Day 1: Part 3, we follow the banks of the River Ouse to the picturesque village of Naburn. Our journey takes us across historic borders and along a famous "ghost" railway line as we hunt for more treasures for our 36-square bingo card. In this video: The Selby to York Cycle Path: We walk the historic trackbed of the old East Coast Main Line. This railway was the primary artery between London and Edinburgh until 1983, when the "Selby Diversion" was built to avoid potential track subsidence caused by the nearby Selby Coalfield. The Naburn Swing Bridge: A masterpiece of Victorian engineering! Built in 1871 by Thomas Elliot Harrison, this wrought-iron bridge once swung open to allow tall-masted ships to reach York. Though permanently fixed in the 1960s, its massive gears are still visible today. The Fisher of Dreams: We take a close look at the stunning 4-meter tall sculpture sitting atop the bridge. Installed in 2001 by artist Pete Rogers, it depicts a fisherman (and his dog!) catching a "train" and has become a landmark for everyone traveling the Solar System Greenway. Crossing the Ridings: We briefly cross the Ouse into the West Riding to capture the best view of the bridge’s ironwork before heading back into the East Riding and into Naburn itself. Village Life: A wander through Naburn reveals the beautiful village green, the classic red telephone box (now serving the community as a life-saving defibrillator station and info point!), and the village’s unique community reading room and bus shelter bookshop. Signs of the Ouse: We head down to a local slipway to see how high the water has risen - a constant reminder of the river's power in this part of the world. Coming Up Next: Stay tuned for the final leg of our Day 1 adventure! We’re heading to the outskirts of York to find a boundary marker in a location that might surprise you - proving the East Riding goes much further than most people think!
