The first part of this presentation will cover the history of practice with respect to mined land reclamation based on the experiences of Jim Kuipers, a mining industry consultant since the early 1980’s. It will explore the concept of “walk away reclamation” and follow with the regulations and practices that have since then been used to address abandoned and operating mines largely from a hardrock mining perspective. This will include addressing mined land reclamation as addressed by U.S. EPA Superfund, BLM and the Forest Service, and will consider concepts such as restoration, remediation, redevelopment, revegetation and regeneration. The second part of the presentation will address the current best practice of geomorphic landform reclamation. Geomorphic landform reclamation combines consideration of existing surrounding landforms to guide reclamation practice in terms of shaping, storm morphology, vegetation and other aspects with stakeholder involvement to establish reclamation visions, goals, objectives and criteria. It combines classic reclamation techniques with experience that recognizes the importance of catastrophic impacts on reclaimed lands, and the need to build in resilience by allowing for the occurrence of those and other natural events over time.
