The First Studio Recording of “Smooth Operator” – EMI Studios, 1983 This recording represents the first-ever studio version of “Smooth Operator,” produced at EMI Studios in early 1983. At the time, EMI Publishing had invited the band to record demo material for consideration, leading to further developments that resulted in a publishing deal with the members of Sade in 1984 or 1985, reportedly involving an advance of £500,000. These sessions built directly on the creative work originally developed by PSP and later refined for the Diamond Life album, released in May 1984. The video includes the original EMI studio recording of Smooth Operator alongside archival photos from Solid Light Studios, Camden, London, where the song first took shape. The EMI recordings were made months before the Diamond Life album sessions began in October 1983 at PowerPlant Studios, produced by Robin Millar and financed by RCA Records. The original lineup at the time comprised Paul Cook (drums), Paul Denman (bass), Stuart Mathewman (saxophone/guitar), and Helen Adu (vocals). The original royalty distribution for Smooth Operator was intended to reflect the song’s creative origins: Cook / Denman / St. John / Adu — with Paul Cook and Paul Denman writing the drum and bass lines, and Ray St. John providing the foundation from his earlier composition Diamond Life, which was later adapted into Smooth Operator. Alongside Smooth Operator, the band also recorded “Should I Love You” and “Spirit” during the same EMI Studio sessions.
