Interpolue, for alto saxophone soloist and mixed ensemble From the concert program: "The biggest sound spectrum of the concert is reached with Interpolue. This world première by Lauri Marjakangas has been composed using the interpolation composition technique, which uses gradual transition between distinct elements to create continuity, cohesion, and transformation, avoiding abrupt changes. The seed of this original work was an artistic residency that Jaime and Lauri carried out in Galicia, Spain, where they studied the sound result of some extended techniques such as multiphonics, bite-tones or singing-tones. The commission, première and recording of Interpolue is supported by The Teosto Comission Grant and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland." (Jaime Estévez Moreira, alto saxophone soloist) "Interpolue takes us on a 15-minute journey through agitation, unrest, and instability, where we can also find moments of striking beauty and intense expressiveness. These atmospheres arise largely from Marjakangas’ inventive use of microtonality and unconventional instrumental techniques: We will hear the piano in more than fifteen different configurations-at times played by up to three performers. The strings explore overpressure passages and eventually play with wooden pencils. The percussion part employs unique setups that dialogue with the woodwind section’s key clicks, flutter-tonguing, and air attacks. The saxophone faces considerable challenges: extremely long passages without conventional breathing, intricate rhythms and metric modulations, extreme dynamic contrasts, and an array of extended techniques. Together, these elements create the unique sonic world of Interpolue. The piece opens with fast, mechanical, and seemingly stable material that developes to unestability. After a metric modulation, stability briefly returns—though the tension remains. This cycle repeats several times before yielding to a calmer, more spacious section. Even here, a sense of unease persists, now shaped primarily through microtonal writing. We encounter whisper-soft moments, beautifully blended timbres, and, in contrast, episodes of deliberate roughness and volume. The work concludes with an extended aleatoric section where the saxophone soloist becomes especially free and expressive. The music slowly dissolves into a quiet, meditative ending. Please, lean back and enjoy this exhilarating journey with us!" (Kyösti Vesterinen - Conductor) ABOUT THE SOLOIST Jaime Estévez Moreira (Vigo, Spain, 2001) is a young musician passionated about the exploration of art from a versatile perspective through the voice of his two main instruments: the saxophones and the Galician bagpipes. His musical journey balances academic training and oral tradition, shaping his understanding of music. This diverse background has led him to perform contemporary repertoire with ensembles like Avanti!, explore symphonic repertoire with orchestras such as the European Union Youth Orchestra, promote traditional Galician music with Os Terribles de Donas, appear as a soloist with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia, and maintain an active chamber music career. Jaime gratuated in 2025 for Master’s Degree in Classical Saxophone Performance and the Pedagogy Studies at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Finland), under the direction of Joonatan Rautiola. His main artistic project at present is Lítore Quartet, a saxophone quartet based in Palma de Mallorca that has developed an intense international career since its founding in 2019. In addition to numerous recognitions and a solid trajectory, this young ensemble actively promotes contemporary creation by commissioning and premiering new works every year (www.litorequartet.com).
