The online media briefing by the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) focused on the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS (CMS COP15) and the launch of the interim report on the State of the World's Migratory Species. CMS Executive Secretary Amy Frankel and Kelly Malsch, Head of Conservation at UN Environment Program World Conservation Monitoring Center, presented key findings from the report, highlighting that the decline of the populations of migratory species of animals covered by UN treaty have worsened from 44% to 49% in 2 Years. They discussed the main drivers of decline, including habitat loss and overexploitation, and emphasized successful conservation actions for species like the Saiga antelope and green turtle. The briefing also covered upcoming initiatives at CMS COP15, including a new global assessment on migratory freshwater fishes and a focus on addressing the illegal and unsustainable taking of migratory species.
