There is a growing and justified discomfort among Zimbabweans about the posture of Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa when it comes to national identity and allegiance. This is not a question of birthplace or ancestry, it is about what a sitting President chooses to emphasise, celebrate, and project to the nation he leads. Mnangagwa has, repeatedly and quite openly, taken pride in highlighting his Zambian connections, going as far as thanking Zambia for creating the pathway that led to his presidency in Zimbabwe. As a Zimbabwean, and many millions, we are left asking, why does this putchist Emmerson sound more animated in affirming Zambia than in affirming Zimbabwe? At a time when Zimbabwe’s healthcare system is strained, its education sector is deteriorating, and civil servants are increasingly neglected, citizens are not just looking for policy, they are looking for belonging. Leadership carries an obligation to embody the nation, to reflect its struggles, and to centre its people. When that emotional and symbolic commitment appears diluted, it reinforces the perception of a leader who is detached from the lived realities of his own citizens. This is what makes Mnangagwa’s rhetoric so jarring. It is not simply what he says about Zambia, it is what Zimbabweans do not hear with equal force about themselves. In moments where the nation requires reassurance, pride, and solidarity, the messaging instead introduces doubt about where the President’s deepest identification, and allegiance lies. Zimbabweans are questioning priority, allegiance, and why we are tolerating this utter arrogance and disrespect. Zimbabweans are asking whether ED sees Zimbabwe as his primary obligation or merely as the office he occupies. That distinction matters, because it speaks directly to why public services are deteriorating while citizens feel increasingly invisible. In the end, this is about more than words. It is about a pattern of signalling that, when combined with governance failures, creates a powerful perception, that Zimbabwe is not being led with the undivided loyalty and urgency it deserves, and that is a question no nation should have to ask of its own President. Emmerson anyanya, varume enough of this nonsense, ED must be stopped, take him to the cleaners. #edmustgo #saynoto2030 #saynotomafidhidynasty #defendtheconstitution
