YUGOSLAVIA: BELGRADE: RESIDENTS PRAY FOR PEACE

(20 May 1999) Natural Sound Thousands of Belgrade residents gathered at the Vaznesnjska Church of Holy Assumption on Thursday to pray for peace on the official Saints Day of Belgrade. The congregation spilled out onto the street outside, where candles were lit in memory of those who have been lost in the war. Local people are turning to religion more than ever as a source of hope and enlightenment, as more are killed or injured as a result of the ongoing conflict. Belgrade's official Saints Day drew thousands of people, who came to pay their respects, pray or be blessed. Thursday's prayers followed another night of severe NATO attacks on the Yugoslav capital, in which at least three people were killed. The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Pavle, blessed the worshippers as they prayed silently for the end to the war. It is thought to be one of the largest congregations ever gathered at the Vaznesnjska Church of Holy Assumption.
