Alta Peak | Sequoia National Park, CA

Alta Peak, the crown jewel of Sequoia National Park, is a coveted peak centrally located within the park that offers up stunning views of the High Sierra, the Great Western Divide, and as far as the eyes can see over towards the Eastern Sierra. There's so much good when it comes to Alta Peak. You'll start out in the Wolverton parking lot, the jumping off point for may other sights to see in the Sequoia backcountry, including the winter favorite, Pear Lake Hut. Wolverton is also the ending point for the highly sought after High Sierra Ski Traverse that starts in the Eastern Sierra in Independence and ends in Sequoia. Alta Peak utilizes the Lakes Trail system and is an out and back run that consists of 14 miles and 4,000' feet of elevation gain. While it's not an outlandishly long run, Alta Peak does top out at over 11,000' feet so be prepared to feel the altitude if you're coming from lower elevations. I was fortunate to have good friend Angelo Castaneda along for the run of Alta Peak, the backcountry is always best when shared with friends. We were pleasantly surprised with how runnable the trail was given the overall grade and condition of the trail, and the bonus was the tree coverage which provided ample shade for most of the run. The wildlife was abundant, as is the case in Sequoia, specifically around Alta Peak. During our day we saw two black bears on the ride up, a multitude of deer, and of course the resident marmots, chipmunks and squirrels. We even met a fellow trail runner at the start of the day who had just completed Western States with 11 minutes to spare (29:49)! He was a proud buckle owner and still recovering from the race. Overall Alta Peak exceeded expectations and was a run every trail runner should look to do if you're visiting the western slopes of the Sierra. Be prepared to share the trail with a few people as it's a popular day hike and overnight backpacking route.
