In addition to refraining from food and drink, all Muslims are expected not to smoke. Ramadan is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam. Fasting during Ramadan is mandatory for adult Muslims, though there are some omissions - for example, Muslims who are ill, traveling, or expectant.
