No topo deste edifício vulcânico destaca-se uma caldeira, com um diâmetro da ordem de 2 km e uma profundidade aproximada de 150 m, no interior da qual se observam alguns domos, espessas escoadas lávicas de natureza traquítica, e mais para oeste, algumas lagoas de pequenas dimensões. No seu cimo inscreve-se uma área de 1.100 hectares, classificada como Reserva Florestal Natural e está inserida na ZEC - Serra Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto PTTER0017 - Rede Natura 2000.
