Located less than an hour away from Luang Prabang, we went to two places that are side by side: Bear Rescue Centre, and the KuangSi Waterfalls, located within Tat Kuang Si National Park. The Bear Rescue Centre was opened in 2003 by Australian non-profit wildlife charity; Free the Bears, caring for moon bears rescued from the illegal wildlife trade & bear bile farms. Most of the bears were taken as cubs after poachers killed their mothers. They are humanized & there is a lack of protected forest suitable for release, so they'll require lifelong care at the sanctuary, up to 35 years. Since 2003, they’ve been creating a safe haven for these gorgeous rescued moon bears who can now relax in hammocks, play with new friends and live a safe, healthy life. Right next door, is the Kuang Si Waterfalls. Kuang Si falls, a beautiful 50m high waterfall with turquoise pools, set in tropical rainforest. The falls, are one of the most beautiful natural sights in northern Laos. A spectacular, many tiered waterfall cascading through the Laotian jungle Walking up the boardwalk-mix-forest-walk, you get to three beautiful swimming holes. There are usually seats or benches by these pools, with signs indicating possible depths and words of caution. The water was pretty cold. The riverbed gets deeper as you amble towards the smaller falls, but then again, those smaller falls make for some great natural massage! If you’re keen on a little more exercise or feeling a bit adventurous, you could hike up to the top of the waterfall. However, note that the access and trail aren’t very clear, since not many people attempt this, so climb with caution. The view from the top is subpar and not worth the additional effort.
