Korean Pronunciation Rules: When ㅂ [b] is Pronounced as ㅁ [m] - Learn Korean with Kdramas!

The Korean language has many letters that undergo sound changes depending on their position in a word or what comes before/after. To native Korean speakers these changes come naturally, but for foreigners and learners they are often not immediately obvious. For example, why is 감사합니다 written as "gamsahaBnida" with the letter ㅂ but spoken as "gamsahaMnida"? This is because whenever the Korean letter ㅂ [b] is followed by a nasal consonant like ㅁ [m] or ㄴ [n], the ㅂ [b] becomes more nasal as well and therefore sounds like an ㅁ [m]. This sound change is called "nasalization" and is easy to remember as a fixed rule: if ㅂ [b] is a final consonant and directly followed by ㅁ [m] or ㄴ [n], it will be pronounced as ㅁ [m]. This happens for example with words like 아닙니다 [animnida], 알겠습니다 [algetseumnida], or 밥 먹자 [bam meokja].
