A retired Director of Operations at Army Headquarters, Major General Ijioma N. Ijioma (rtd), has urged Nigerians not to expect United States troops recently deployed to Nigeria to directly engage terrorists in combat. According to him, the US team’s role is strictly limited to training, intelligence sharing, and providing technical support to Nigerian security forces. He stressed that the responsibility for defeating banditry and insurgency ultimately lies with Nigeria. The US Africa Command confirmed that a small team was deployed to provide “unique capabilities” as part of renewed security cooperation, though specific operational details were not disclosed. Security sources indicate the mission will focus on intelligence gathering and enabling Nigerian-led strikes. General Ijioma criticised what he described as a lack of political will to decisively confront insecurity, noting that Nigeria possesses the military capacity, including air power, to respond effectively. He argued that no foreign nation would risk its troops to fight Nigeria’s internal battles. Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Goodwin Nwobodo echoed this position, emphasising that foreign assistance can only complement—not replace—Nigeria’s own security architecture. He added that meaningful collaboration depends on credible intelligence sharing and a firm national commitment. As insecurity continues to challenge communities across the country, the big question remains: will foreign support strengthen Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts, or does the solution depend entirely on domestic political resolve? 🔖 HASHTAGS #NigeriaSecurity #USTroopsInNigeria #CounterTerrorism #USAfricaCommand #Banditry #Insurgency #NigerianArmy #MilitaryCooperation #SecurityPartnership #IntelligenceSharing #NationalSecurity #TerrorismFight #PoliticalWill #DefenceMatters #SecurityReform #NigerianForces #GlobalSecurity #WestAfricaSecurity #MilitaryStrategy #ForeignPolicy #NigeriaNews #DefenceAnalysis #SecurityUpdate #ArmedForcesNigeria #WarOnTerror #SecurityDebate #USNigeriaRelations #StrategicPartnership #AirPower #NationalDefense #BreakingNewsNigeria
