In this TEDx talk, Prof. B. Ravi, who is currently the Director of NITK Surathkal and a key contributor in India's MedTech space, gives insight into how three people sparked a major innovation in the world of healthcare. He begins with a simple observation, if a person from a hundred years ago were to walk into one of our hospitals today, he would think it was a scene from a science fiction movie. Yet behind every medical device is an engineer who at one point in his life probably wondered how he would ever build something a doctor could trust. Then Prof. Ravi narrates the story of an electronics engineer, an anaesthetist, and a software engineer who met at a hackathon. What began as a prototype to send heartbeats remotely grew into years of field testing, doctor feedback, redesigns, patents, and trials. When COVID-19 struck, that was a huge roadblock for their startup, but they adapted. And their digital stethoscope protected doctors, helped ICU teams, and reached thousands of users. It even drew interest from Harvard Business Review and Shark Tank. Throughout their journey, Prof. Ravi drives home a few timeless lessons: solve real life problems, check if people will buy your solution, build great value, and work with people who complement your skills. In the end, his message was simple: “With belief, collaboration, and persistence, even the smallest ideas can become life-changing innovations.” B. Ravi is the Director of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, Mangalore. He is a distinguished alumnus of NIT Rourkela, where he completed B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, followed by Masters and PhD at IISc Bangalore, and joined as faculty at IIT Bombay in 1992. There he founded Rapid Prototyping Centre, E-Foundry, OrthoCAD Centre, Biomedical Engineering & Technology Innovation Centre (BETIC), BIRAC Early Technology Accelerator, and ICMR-DHR Centre of Excellence. These and other projects received over ₹ 150 crore funding. He also headed Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship. Prof. Ravi received several awards and honours such as Fellowship of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Institution of Engineers, and Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellow.
