The Swellendam parkrun route follows sand tracks, crosses forest paths, and passes along the dam wall with sweeping views of the mountains—even when water levels are low. Clear sand arrows mark the way, and cross-marks show where not to go. Expect a small, friendly group of runners and walkers. This is a trail parkrun with a mix of uphills and downhills: gentler descents on the way out, and steady climbs toward the finish. Even though local runners warn it can be challenging, it’s incredibly rewarding. You may even find yourself walking alone at times—perfect for soaking in the solitude and natural beauty. My only quibble: no distance markers, so bring a watch or fitness tracker. Still, the scenery more than makes up for it.
