Step into one of South Africa’s most celebrated coastal trails with this immersive 360° walk from Mossel River to Kraal Rock in Hermanus. Filmed for Table and Tide, this journey along the Hermanus Cliff Path captures sweeping ocean views, fynbos-covered slopes, and moments with members of the Hermanus Botanical Society, who joined the walk and feature in friendly conversations along the return route. This is Part 1, with Part 2 coming soon — continuing eastwards from Kraal Rock. A Short History of the Hermanus Cliff Path The Hermanus Cliff Path is more than just a coastal walkway — it’s a piece of Hermanus heritage. Originally a simple footpath used by early fishermen and coastal residents, it was gradually formalised in the 1960s–1980s through community efforts and conservation groups. The path famously skirts the rugged coastline of Walker Bay, an area that began attracting travellers as early as the late 1800s when Hermanus was promoted as a seaside “health retreat” known for its clean air and therapeutic sea breezes. The transformation of the trail into the protected, well-maintained route we know today is thanks in large part to the Hermanus Botanical Society and the Cliff Path Management Group, whose restoration work preserved the indigenous fynbos and ensured public access. Their stewardship helped the path become one of the world’s best land-based whale-watching locations — especially between June and November when southern right whales return to Walker Bay. What Makes This Section Special The stretch from Mossel River to Kraal Rock is a favourite among botanists, photographers, and walkers. It passes through a variety of coastal vegetation zones, including pockets of limestone fynbos found almost nowhere else on Earth. Kraal Rock itself is an iconic lookout point with deep cultural and ecological significance — a natural amphitheatre of stone facing the full power of the Atlantic. This section of the path is also rich in birdlife and is part of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve’s extended coastal interface, linking sea cliffs to mountain slopes in a single sweep of biodiversity. Enjoy this immersive 360° experience, and stay tuned for Part 2, where the trail continues eastward toward some of the most dramatic viewpoints on the Hermanus coastline.
