Overview: This two-hour seminar seeks to assist participants in taking the next step in their writing career. Targeting early career writers, this seminar will provide participants with the basic knowledge they will need to navigate the various aspects of the publishing industry. What’s the difference between academic and non-profit publishers? Are bigger or smaller presses better? When should I self-publish? All these questions and more will be discussed in the format below. Part 1 – Short Form (30 min): Poems. Stories. Essays. Plays and Scripts. Chapbooks. We will begin by focusing on shorter, standalone pieces and what markets will accept them. We will discuss pay rates and rights, as well as formatting standards and submission etiquette. We will also look at the role of magazines, journals, and other periodicals in advancing one’s career to publishing longer form works. Part 2 – Long Form (1 hr): Novellas. Novels. Poetry and Story Collections. For those who are looking to publish long form, we will talk about when it’s necessary to secure an agent and how to do so. We will also talk about how and when to query publishers directly. We will go over the “Big 5” publishers, as well as smaller presses and what to expect from different types of houses. Lastly, we will discuss the publishing process and some of the many careers tangential to writing. This will include how the process differs when one is self-publishing. Conclusion (30 min): We will conclude by discussing each of the participants’ own careers and discuss how they might achieve their individual goals.
