Between 1819 and 1823, Beethoven wrote his largest-scale piano work, the "33 Variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli," while simultaneously writing his last piano sonatas and the Missa Solemnis. The theme, on which this work is based is a 32-bar waltz by the composer and publisher Anton Diabelli, who commissioned the eminent composers of the time to write one variation each. Beethoven, allegedly having initially dismissed the idea as beneath his dignity, proceeded to employ this paltry theme as the foundation for a work of unparalleled ambition and magnitude. The massiveness and scale of this work notwithstanding, the Diabelli Variations is above all a candid and intimate testimony to the art of composition. In the same way that painters have extensively used the idea of the artist in the studio, and in the same way that writers have long elaborated upon the challenges and possibilities of writing, Beethoven embodies the freedoms and possibilities of composition in a work based on an amateurish and unassuming theme. In Beethoven’s hands, a meager waltz undergoes myriad transformations that encompass the many different genres and forms of music. To name just one contrasting aspect of the work, elements of the theme are presented in variations resembling boisterous and simplistic marches, and at the same time serve as the foundation of the most intricate polyphonic (and fugal) writing. Throughout the work, the variations that seem to be farthest from the spirit of the original waltz are intertwined with dance-like variations that remind us of the basis on which this adventurous work is built.
