www.ariellanyi.com/blog Beethoven's cello sonata in D major, Op. 102 No. 2, was written in 1815, and it was his last accompanied sonata for any instrument. An explosive first movement is followed by the only full-length slow movement in the five sonatas for cello and piano, and a dramatic fugue for the finale. The last movement is emblematic of Beethoven's obsession with fugal writing, echoing many of his later works, like the Hammerklavier sonata. But it is all the more exciting here, since we do not associate fugal writing with the duo sonata genre. The sonata is deemed one of Beethoven's most technically challenging and complex works, and for a long time it was considered austere, cerebral, and nearly unplayable. Recorded at the Royal Academy of Music, London Allegro con brio - 0:06 Adagio con molto sentimento d'affetto - 7:00 Allegro fugato - 16:06
