www.ariellanyi.com/blog This is an early exemplar of Beethoven's late piano sonatas, a work characterized throughout its two movements by poetic meter, which is not commonly heard in Beethoven's piano sonatas (especially the later ones). The fiery first movement serves as a polar opposite to the serene second movement. The contrasts between the two movements are bold: minor-major, tumult-consolation, insecurity-continuity. What unites the two movements, however, is the poetic rhythmic meter, which gives the listener the sense of an extra-musical story, perhaps an epic poem, being conveyed in parallel with the music.
