Since 2022, the Strathspey Railway's ex-Caledonian Railway 812 Class No.828 has been been based 450 miles away from its Scottish home, at the Spa Valley Railway, in the southeast of England. I've been meaning to have a trip over to film the loco since then - having only previously seen it at the Severn Valley Railway in 2011 - but, never fully committed, for one reason or another. Having watched @TheSouthernerYTChannel's recent video of 828 and with the weather looking uncharacteristically decent on the 14th - for this year, so far - the effort was finally made to catch this rare Scottish survivor at work far away from home. Running to the SVR's green timetable, 828 would be paired with the line's resident Class 33 No.33063, working four round trips between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge. Due to a lack of run around facilities at Eridge, all trains were worked top and tailed, with 33063 working from Tunbridge Wells West and 828 from Eridge. Starting out at Harrison's Rocks, between Eridge and Groombridge, we catch 828 on the first round trip of the day. Moving up the line to the woods near High Rocks, we next see 828 as it snakes away from the speed restriction over Broom Lane Bridge. Heading over to Groombridge, we find ourselves on the footbridge over Groombridge Junction, where the old spur that connected with the Oxted line can be seen to the right of the line to Eridge. Here, we catch an Eridge bound train with 33063 at the helm. Currently running in a blue undercoat, temporarily, the 33 makes a steady departure through the well maintained cutting in some strong mid-afternoon sun. After this, there was an unsuccessful relocation to Poke Hill Farm for 828 on the return run which resulted in a shot which cut in far too late to be useable, for me. With that in mind, we skip ahead to the final run of the day, other to Cold Bath Bridge, where 828 is captured after a stop at High Rocks Station, heading up the 1 in 88 gradient towards Tunbridge Wells. I wouldn't say it was the most successful day, because of my own decisions, and I don't think I made the best of the light we had, but it was still nice to finally get some footage of the 'Caley Goods', before the loco inevitably (possibly this year?) heads back home. Along with just getting myself out with the camera, having passed on doing some of the various winter galas held last month. Filmed on Saturday February 14th, using a Panasonic HC-X1500 with an Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone. I hope you enjoy the video.
