This video from Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters provides a step-by-step guide on how to flush a heparinized line at home. If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare provider. Here's a summary of the process: Prepare your workspace and wash your hands . Ensure the surface is clean, then wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer . Remember to clean between fingers, under fingernails, and up to the wrist . Gather all necessary supplies . Use your instruction sheet to ensure you have everything, and remember to discard single-use items after use. Wash your hands again. Clean the end of the cap. Remove and discard the orange or green cap cover, but keep the clear cap on. Using your non-dominant hand to hold the line, scrub the end of the cap with an alcohol pad for 15 seconds, focusing on the top and threads. Let it dry for another 15 seconds. Attach and flush the line with saline. Keep control of the line, and if the cap touches anything, re-clean it. Remove the cap from the saline syringe, push out any air bubbles, then push and twist the saline syringe into the cap. If the line has a clamp, unclamp it. Pulse flush the entire saline syringe. While holding the clear cap firmly, untwist to disconnect and discard the saline syringe. Attach and flush with heparin. Keep control of the line and clean the cap again with a new alcohol pad for 15 seconds. Let it dry for 15 seconds. Remove the cap from the heparin syringe and push out air bubbles. Twist the heparin syringe into the cap. Pulse flush the amount of heparin specified by your medical team. Holding the clear cap firmly, untwist to disconnect and discard the heparin syringe. Attach a new cap cover and clamp the line. Attach the new orange or green cap cover by pushing firmly and twisting it onto the cap. Clamp the line if needed. If applicable, repeat all steps with the next lumen.
