Why is Edge Play Dangerous & Hard to Research?

Rarely do I get ANGRY. Today I am. Long story short--most established k1nk educators agree that the way #edgeplay is portrayed online--in a glamorizing & flippant way, can lead to newbies diving into dangerous things w/o knowing the serious risks. In this vid I explain what edge play is as a general category of play, why it’s risky, why it’s not a beginner activity, and the importance of research & training. I don’t mention the particulars of EP activities on social media because I don't have the time to discuss the required nuance--but this will be covered thoroughly in my book. Anyway, this whole thing came up cuz I kept hearing people on soc media talking abt the most widely talked about edge play kink in a way that was alarmingly incorrect, directly undermined consent & promoted assault. Curious where this misinformation originated, I googled the kink. The 1st search hit was an article from Psychology Today that’s dangerously wrong & defines this kink as 'giving up consent & your ability to use safe words. NOT TRUE! This misinformation is dangerous. This is the 1st thing that pops up when people google & that’s horrifying. It’s in direct opposition w/the most foundational principle in kink-- CONSENT and thousands are seeing it, believe it’s true & try to play this way. I‘m NOT saying don’t listen to people w/Dr. in their name, respected publications, or experts. What I am saying is evaluate all your sources w/a critical eye & cross-reference info. As students of k1nk we need to be proficient in assessing the validity of info we read AND vetting experts who are saying it. Furthermore, the experts speaking on k1nk may be very knowledgeable abt a very specific topic so in vetting they check out fine. But even though they’re experts on a certain subject/s, when they step outside of their area of expertise, they sometimes dangerously miss the mark. Also, many experts are familiar w/k1nk basics but when it comes to advanced & nuanced sub-topics, they can misunderstand & misteach critical pieces of info. Vet experts by topic too. Not everything on the internet is true, y’all. Even things that seem reputable can be misleading and incorrect.
