Or maybe you've been playing and then run out of ideas or missed that flash of inspiration to get you through some chord changes. Well, as usual, Barry Harris comes to the rescue with a brilliant concept! This time, we'll be looking at what he called the "5-4-3-2 Phrases." In a nutshell, these are little bits of bebop language that can link together different scale runs, or arpeggios, to help you get through changes easier. This concept illustrates a fantastic broader concept: the phrase study. We can learn a lot about improvising and come up with lots of new ideas by doing this sort of work. To get the most out of this video, you should really be super familiar with the major scale, pivoting, and all the various ways we can put extra half steps into our scales in order to extend lines and make chord tones land on the beat.
