Catalina Island. Classic route from Avalon to Two Harbors via Airport and Little Harbor. On the way back from Two Harbors, we chose the Middle Ranch Road route for some variety. 45 miles and about 6500 feet of climbing. I've been wanting to do this for over a year, and while the fall is probably the best season for this, I had an opening in my calendar and took the opportunity. Doing this in February comes with the benefit of really cheap hotel options. The downside is unpredictable weather. We had a storm system approaching and were a little worried about getting soaked the entire ride. In the end, the solid gray skies kept the temperature at a perfect level. No need for constantly refilling water bottles or trying to stay cool. And no rain! We stayed at the Catalina Island Inn for a very competitive rate of ~$100/night. It was bunk beds in a tight room, but we weren't out there for luxury. Def better than a tent. There is a coffee shop around the corner that opens at 6am, allowing for an early departure to catch the afternoon ferry back to Long Beach. Saw some Bison and a cute Islan Fox and had a groovy overall ride. The roads were in very good shape, despite the occasional washboard, but nothing technical. This ride requires a bit more planning than I like. Here are two important logistical details: You need a Catalina Island Conservancy Membership and a bike permit for the day of riding. You can get that pass in Avalon at the Conservancy's office. $50 You also need a bike reservation for the Catalina Express ferry. It's cheap, but I guess in high season they sometimes run out of space for bikes. Here is our ride on Strava: / strava
