Measuring the Size of India’s Digital Economy

ICRIER presents Digital Dividends – a podcast series on unpacking India’s digital economy. In our first episode, Deepak Mishra (Director & CE, ICRIER) and Mansi Kedia (Senior Fellow, ICRIER) discuss the key findings of the recently launched report on estimating the size of India’s digital economy with Puja Mehra (Senior Fellow, Consultant, ICRIER). This episode focuses on some key questions: 🔹 How is the digital economy defined? 🔹 How is it different from the traditional economy? 🔹 What is the size of India’s digital economy? This study was commissioned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) About the speakers: Deepak Mishra is the Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). Prior to joining ICRIER, he was the Practice Manager at the World Bank’s Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment Global Practice, responsible for East Asia and Pacific region. Deepak has held various positions at the World Bank, including the Co-director of the World Development Report 2016 (Digital Dividends), Country Economist for Ethiopia, Pakistan, Sudan and Vietnam. His research work has been published in various academic journals including the Journal of Development Economics, the Journal of International Economics and the Journal of Agriculture Economics. Her research focuses on issues of the digital economy including governance of the internet, emerging technology, competition and digital public infrastructure. She is currently a member of the CII National Committee on Telecom and Broadband. She was Co-Chair of the T20 Task Force on Our Common Digital Future: Affordable, Accessible and Inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure (2023), a Mid-Career Fellow of ISOC (2022) and member of the Direct Tax Committee (2017) and. She earned her B.Sc. Economics from St. Xavier’s, Kolkata, MBA from ISB, Hyderabad and PhD from IIFT, New Delhi.
