Sushma Rawat: Trailblazing through the Oil and Gas industry

Uncharted Waters is an interview series spotlighting women who are breaking barriers and making strides in traditionally male-dominated and restricted sectors. From engineering and mining to finance and health, these fields have long been challenging for women to enter, whether due to deep-rooted societal norms or legal restrictions deeming such work morally inappropriate, dangerous, hazardous, or overly strenuous. Through these interviews, we aim to understand the challenges women face in these sectors and explore the policy channels that can help overcome them. This is our second interview of this series, in which we speak to Ms. Sushma Rawat, the exploration director of ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd.). ONGC is Maharatna, largest crude oil and natural gas, contributing 71 percent to Indian domestic production. Ms Sushma Rawat post graduated in geology and is the first woman to go on well site(operations) and she became the first women director (exploration) of ONGC on 1st January 2023.
