In this video, we witness the reclamation of an old Eastern tradition of the St. Thomas Christians in Kerala, India. The Three-Day Lent with prayers and supplications for the forgiveness of sins is in remembrance of the people of Nineveh, who averted a great calamity in their city by prayer and fasting. The three days are also a reference to the three days Prophet Jonah spent inside the belly of a whale. The community gathered in the church spent the days in penitential prayer and singing, accompanied by kneeling and prostrations, seeking compassion and forgiveness. “Maran esraham alain” Our Lord, have mercy on us, is the key phrase. The Portuguese missionaries looked at this rigorous and austere practice of Three-Day Lent of the St. Thomas Christians with great awe and admiration. For unknown reasons, the Syro Malabar Catholics discontinued this tradition, while the Knanaya Christians and the Chaldean Syrian Church of the East zealously kept the tradition alive. What we see in the video is a revival among the Syro-Malabar Catholics at Kuravilangad on January 26, 2026. The prayers and chants are bilingual, in Malayalam and Syriac. Let us watch prayerfully.
