This week we continue our short series on the perseverance of the Old Testament prophets, taking a deeper look at the prophet Jonah — often called the reluctant preacher. But Jonah is not mainly a story about a man’s perseverance. It is a story about God’s perseverance. God calls Jonah to preach to Nineveh — the capital city of Assyria — a brutal and violent empire Jonah despised. Jonah runs the opposite direction, and what follows is a powerful picture of God’s pursuit, discipline, mercy, and compassion. In this message we explore: • Why Jonah ran from God (and why we do too) • Identity, calling, and the struggle of obedience after salvation • How sin spreads and affects the people around us • God’s control over creation (storm, sea, fish, vine, worm, wind) • Why Nineveh’s repentance made Jonah angry • The heart of God: gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in love • The real “perseverance” in Jonah — the perseverance of God Jonah reminds us that God does not give up easily — on Jonah, on Nineveh, or on us. And it forces the question: Where might I still be running? What is God trying to get my attention about? 📖 Scripture references include: Jonah 1–4 2 Kings 14:23–25 James 5 (prophets & perseverance) Ephesians 5 (wake up, sleeper) 0:00 Intro — Prophets Series & Why Jonah 1:30 Reluctant Preacher: Calling, Identity, and Detours 4:04 Learning to Hear and Follow God 8:18 Jonah as “Prototype” of Post-Salvation Struggle 11:17 Jonah 1:1–9 — Running from God 13:48 “Down, Down, Down” — The Pattern of Flight 16:26 Sin’s Consequences for Others 17:47 Jonah 1:11–16 — The Sailors Fear the Lord 19:36 God’s Control Over Creation 20:23 God’s Compassion for Those Who Don’t Know Him 21:52 Why Jonah Hated Nineveh 23:24 The Historical Setting (Assyria / 2 Kings 14) 24:30 Jonah’s “Shortest Sermon” & Nineveh Repents 25:28 Jonah 4:1–2 — Angry at God’s Mercy 28:49 The Real Perseverance: Not Jonah’s, God’s 29:53 Personal Application: Where Am I Still Running? 30:34 Prayer & Closing
