Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out. A blues standard, written by pianist Jimmy Cox in 1923. The song became best associated with Bessie Smith, when she recorded it in 1929. Nina Simone later recorded it in 1960. Eric Clapton recorded this great old blues tune a few times in his life, the most recent (I think) was for the MTV unplugged series in 1992. That's the version I've grown up with....but soon enough I got into Bessie Smith, and then heard other great versions such as Janis Joplin and Norah Jones. In any case....it's not a very cheery song, but it's a damned soothing song to sing when you're feeling down and out. And I have been a wee bit down and out over the holidays. But...that's life, whaddya gonna do! So...I'll dedicate this one to others who are a feeling a little blue over this holiday season. I hope better times lay ahead for all of us in 2026! Take good care everyone, all the best in health and happiness for this new year! Please feel free to like/subscribe.
