Gary, Indiana. How did a once thriving town known as the "Magic City" end up earning itslef the title "Murder Capital of America"? Gary Indiana was founded in 1906 by U.S. Steel Corporation and was named after chairman of the company, Elbert H. Gary. The Steel factory attracted workers from all over. By 1920, the Gary factory employed over 16 thousand workers and was the largest steel plant in the country. The town was thriving. Life was good. New schools and churches were being constructed. New businesses were created. People were coming from all sorts of places to visit. Everything was going great in Gary and it earned itself the nickname of the "Magic City". So what happened? Unfortunately, Gary depended too much on Steel. With growing competition from overseas steel manufacturers, there was no choice but to make steel cheaper. This led to many people being let go. The total amount of workers at the steel plant went from 30,000 in 1970 to 6,000 in 1990 and the total population dropped by 60,000 people. Those who could afford to leave Gary, did. Those who could not stayed and lived in poverty. It was around this time in 1990 that Gary had become known as the Murder Capital Of America. Join me today as we visit this once flourishing town to explore some of the many abandoned buildings. We will be checking out an abandoned stadium, a school, a train station, and a theater. These buildings all tell a story about a once prospering town. As we walk through them, try to imagine what they may have looked like back when Gary was known as the magic city and the town was full of smiles and optimism. The first place we explore is Gilroy Stadium. Gilroy stadium opened up in 1956 and could seat 10,000 people. Due to the price and time to build both exceeding expectations, some features of the stadium such as the running track, were never completed. Despite that fact, this stadium was till used for sports, concerts, and other public gatherings. In 1965 a talent competition was held in this stadium and the Jackson 5 actually performed here. Our next explore is Gary Union Station which was built in 1910, 4 years after Gary was founded. Trains ran through Gary to Baltimore, Detroit, NY City, and a few other locations. This exact train station was actually featured in the 1951 movie "Appointment with Danger". This location has also been featured in the History Channel's TV show, "Life After People". As I was doing research on this train station I also found a news report about a redevelopment plan for this place. You guys will have to let me know what you think about this one. Emerson High School - Emerson High School was built in 1909 and was actually Gary's first high school. This school was designed by architect William B. Ittner, who designed over 400 school buildings. I've actually been inside of 2 other schools that he designed, Cleveland high school (the castle school) and Carr school! Emerson high school came close to lasting 100 years but unfortunately it had to be closed down due to mold. Students began getting sick and renovation efforts began. The problem ended up being much worse than anyone originally thought, funds ran out, and the problem was not able to be fully taken care of. The school closed down for good in 2008, and since then, the only people that have been in here have been people like me. Palace Theater - The palace theater was completed in 1925. It had 3000 seats so plenty of people could come here to see stage shows and motion pictures. The palace theater was actually features on the History channel's TV show "Life After People". What was once a great place to bring your date on a Friday night is now a place for people to bring a camera and a flashlight and talk to their YouTube audience.
