I was working on my recently-started sub-project Music in Mainland China – 1949 to 2016, when Teresa Teng's name – not surprisingly – kept appearing. Her influence on Chinese Music during her short life is already acknowledged and revered, and she has been a central part of my Taiwan project. But I hadn't fully realized the massive part that her music played in Mainland China itself, as the cultural doors were finally opened by Deng Xiaoping in 1978. Her music had been known to mainlanders for years via tapes and radio. People defied the government and found ways to listen to Teresa and others such as Bobby Liu and Tam Roman. The youth of mainland China had awoken!! Teresa never sang in China - she was on the verge of doing so when she sadly died in 1995 at the age of 43. However she was so instrumental in igniting the fire! So after a little absence, it's time for a new Teresa upload at this channel. A remarkable and very wonderful lady. My other uploads have biographical details of Teresa's life ... but then so do a multitude of websites. This is an 18 year-old Teresa's first recording of Alishan Girl in 1971, for her album "Teresa Teng Song 20 - Why leave memories" AWK-048, released on Universe Records in April 1971. It was re-released on cd in 2014 by New Century Workshop (HK) with a cardboard sleeve. Her later recordings and singing of Alishan are considered more vibrant and polished, and it is those ones that you can hear on You Tube. I love the free-flowing, youthfully exhuberant energy of it, and the wilder mountain feel to it. The same year, Zhang Yiwen, then 44, recorded an equally "wild" version with the fast-singing middle section which is not usually sung. Clearly one had influenced the other here.
