Today’s Lincolnshire village features one of the most interesting customs you may or may not have been a part of at school. Every year on May 1st, many schools break out the maypole – they certainly did at my school anyway. It involved learning some complicated dances that twist ribbons into various patterns, and dressing up in traditional Lincolnshire clothing. Whilst the custom may be Germanic, the exact origins are still undetermined. Nevertheless in this village, it makes no difference. Every year the May Day Fete is the highlight of life in this quiet corner of West Lindsey. Schoolchildren flock to the village from all around, and get involved with something that’s been around for at least the last two centuries. The enormous maypole dominates this village, overlooking the village hall, which is funded no less by donations made to a hobby horse! That village hall is the former school house built by Thomas Whichcote. He is the man who would own a lot of land in and around the village, including the nearby Harpswell Hall. The school was extended in order to hold 100 schoolchildren in the 1800s, but now it is a village hall, shared with Harpswell. There are two former chapels and a very interesting church here too, but you may feel a little short changed by the video when you compare it to the military history that the neighbouring parish has. Arguably, this village is the quieter, much more maligned twin of the two and you want the RAF history you’ll be waiting for the second one, and I can promise you that video will be jam packed with things. Here though, this is a much more gentle affair. Have a dance around the maypole in the village of HEMSWELL. **** My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands. Join me as I try to visit every single parish in West Lindsey. There are 128.
